Abstract
Abstract
English as a lingua franca (ELF) is defined and a comprehensive overview of research into the pragmatics of ELF is given. Early ELF studies often investigated ELF as a learner language, but more recent research takes a broader view by examining the ways that EFL speakers accomplish communication in everyday practices. Three strands of recent research are described: one identifies strategies for negotiation of meaning, the second studies the role of ELF users' multilingual repertoires in communication, and the third documents interactional elements such as
Yeah
and
Yes
. Several suggestions for future research on ELF interactions are also provided.
