Abstract
AbstractUsing isotopic dilution experiments the intramolecular and intermolecular contributions to the proton nuclear magnetic relaxation rate in glycerol were determined separately at frequencies between 6 MHz and 180 MHz and at temperatures between ‐ 20°C and + 72 ° C. Also some deuteron relaxation rates in glycerol‐d3were measured at 6 MHz and comparable temperatures. The intramolecular and intermolecular proton relaxation rates are of similar magnitude but show different frequency dependence. The former contribution can be rationalized on the basis of a Cole‐Davidson distribution of rotational correlation times, as is customary in dielectric relaxation studies, and close agreement with dielectric results is found. The intermolecular proton relaxation rate on the other hand could not be explained satisfactorily on the basis of Torrey's theory, using independently measured translational self‐diffusion constants.
