Abstract
Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) have two attractive
characteristics: very fast switching speeds and stable alignment
against electrical fringe fields from neighboring pixels.
However, care needs to be taken because FLC panels can be
prone to alignment defects caused by Chevron structures. At this
time, we have succeeded in developing a new FLC which has an
improved temperature range, with a wider SmC phase, and
which is more stable, thus making it less likely to have
alignment defects. We look forward to demonstrating this to
you with LCOS panels containing this new FLC.
