1. Hermann Zorn, born 24.1.1896 in Hamburg, died 6.10.1983 in Mannheim. University studies at Hamburg and Dresden. 1926-45 with BASF at Mannheim and Leuna. From 1943 responsible for all activities concerning synthetic lubricants for the IG-Farben Group. 1955-68, professor and director of the Institute of Technical Chemistry, University of Vienna (Austria).
2. Middle oil, a distillation fraction of brown coal (lignite) from the hydrogenation process (150°-315°C).
3. BASF's so-called ‘Ammonia laboratory’ (headed by - see ref. 12) in Oppau, near Mannheim, did extensive work on catalysis between 1920 and 1945. Prof. M. Pier was head of all the coal hydrogenation and synthesis activities with fuels and oils.
