5. In the tetracyclic ketones obtained by cyclization of phen-oxazine-, phenoselenazine-, and phenothiazine-10-propionic acids [See literature citations (8a) and (8e-h)], a single ar-substituent in the tricyclic system can lead to the formation of two isomeric products; however, the authors cited invariably assigned only one of the two possible structures, but in no instance was evidence presented to confirm these assignments. The unambiguous assignments made in this paper represent, therefore, the first application of pmr and uv spectra, and X-ray analysis, to this structural problem.
