Abstract
AbstractAmyloidosis of the salivary glands is a rare occurrence. Due to non‐specific clinical presentation, the diagnosis can be overlooked. Here we present a case of a localized bilateral parotid glands AL kappa‐light chain amyloid deposition without systemic involvement, as well as a literature review. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) of a right parotid lesion was performed with rapid on‐site evaluation (ROSE). Slides showed characteristic amyloid staining with Congo red and typical Apple‐green birefringence under polarized light microscopy. Amyloid in the head and neck can be misinterpreted as other materials such as colloid, keratin, necrosis, hyaline degeneration especially when the condition is not suspected.
