1. The electron theory of real extended solids involves both the problem of many interacting electrons and the problem of multiple scattering through the nuclei. It thus combines many-body and multi-center theory. The HEG is an idealized model with the positive nuclear charges uniformly smeared out, so that “only” the many-body problem remains. See, e.g., M.
