Abstract
The additive risk model, also known as additive hazards model, was introduced by Odd Aalen as an alternative for Cox's proportional hazards model. The effect of covariates on the hazard is assumed to be additive rather than multiplicative. The model is extremely flexible and naturally allows time‐dependent effects of the covariates. It is especially useful for exploratory analysis or when the proportional hazards assumption is in doubt. This contribution discusses the model itself, as well as estimation, either by ordinary least squares or maximum likelihood, diagnostics, and related models.
