Abstract
Abstract
The geomorphology and hydrology of the Serra do Mar in southern Brazil offer good possibilities for hyroelectric development. The main problem is the deep alteration of the gneisses and granites which constitute most of the range. Sugar-loaf summits in the range are explained as the result of ancient (at least Tertiary) weathering plus recent uplift. Another feature of the range is the development in granitic terrain of so-called ablation tunnels, such as those which have previously been described in sedimentary terrain.
