Abstract
Abstract
The antlers of the type species of Cervus (Dama) somonensis from Menchecourt (France) are very incomplete and are therefore a poor basis for definition of new species. Several remains have been incorrectly assigned to the species. Those described by Grimaldi really belong to C. (D.) grimaldiensis n.sp. and to at least one other species. Similar antlers collected at Caours (Somme) are deer antlers, whereas one from the Quaternary of Vendeuil (Aisne) is that of a young Irish elk.
