Energy security as a strategic priority of national security

Abstract

Subject. The article investigates risk-forming factors and threats in the field of energy security of the real sector of the economy. Objectives. The aim is to substantiate indicators and thresholds to assess the state of the energy sector, to test the methodology for measuring the energy security of the territory on the case of the real sector of the economy of the Republic of Mordovia. Methods. I employ methods of scientific abstraction, analysis, and synthesis. Results. The paper shows that energy security is the most important priority of Russia. Virtually all other elements of national security depend on its condition. The key threats to the economy of the Republic of Mordovia include acute energy shortage of the region and high degree of deterioration of basic production assets. Conclusions. Development of "green technologies" and alternative energy are identified as a priority direction for ensuring the national security of the country. This is associated with depletion of fuel and energy resources and aggravation of environmental problems. It is required to promote access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy sources for all subjects of the Russian Federation.
