Abstract
Subject. The article considers problems of natural ecosystems destruction during military operations, and formation of mechanisms for post-conflict reconstruction.
Objectives. The study aims to analyze the mechanisms of the impact of armed conflicts on natural ecosystems and biodiversity, define factors affecting possible environmental and economic damage.
Methods. I employ methods of systems analysis.
Results. The study established that environmental and economic damage caused by a particular armed conflict is a result of several unique factors. There is no evidence that military planners consider environmental impacts when planning or conducting military operations. I reviewed international legal initiatives in the field of environmental protection during hostilities.
Conclusions. Armed conflicts at different stages of development have a very negative impact on the structure of ecosystems and biodiversity. Post-conflict reconstruction of environmental institutions is a key element of the strategy to achieve sustainable development goals.
