Abstract
Peritoneal dialysis is a medical procedure used to remove dialyzable (endogenous and exogenous) toxins, both in acute kidney injury and in chronic kidney disease. Each animal which has indication for peritoneal dialysis needs a rigorous clinical examination before the procedure, and also biochemical and haematological blood analyses, as well as urinalysis. It is important to know the etiology, the evolution of the disease, as well as the existence of other conditions or the treatment the patient is receiving.
Complications of peritoneal dialysis are common but can be easily managed if known or addressed early. The most common complications are peritoneal catheter obstruction, electrolyte imbalances, hypoalbuminemia and bacterial peritonitis.
