2. The first ref. to the House inMMis on 6 April 1799,MM,I,15, when Rumford and Thos. Barnard reported "that the late Mr. Mellish's house in Albemarle Street might be a very proper situation for this Institution". One week later Henry Holland and John Soame surveyed the house, estimating its value at £4500(/c. cit., p. 19). The annual rates and taxes were £83 15s, ground rent(or£600 to purchase the freehold).
