1. Smith and Jones, 1960–1; Rigold, 1963. Some later maps havebeen published, but they are either partial (Bailey, 1977; Alston, 1999) or impressionistic (Coutin, 1990). Smith, 1978, 123, stated that more than 350 readily identifiable Wealden houses were to be found in Kent; this figure was an estimate rather than a precise count, but corresponds quite closely to the number now identified there.
2. Listing grade and reference numbers are included for most Kent, Suffolk and Sussex examples, for which the base lists were derived from the Statutory Lists (although these do not always describe known examples as Wealdens); they have been added occasionally for other places. For a small number of early references, the place but not the address was recorded, and it has not been possible to re-identify all of these.
