3. William Crookes (1832–1919). E. E. F. D'Albe,The Life of Sir William Crookes, London, 1923, remains the standard biographical account of Crookes's life. He received his early chemical education at the Royal College of Chemistry between 1848 and 1850, and then became an assistant there until 1854. He then worked in Oxford and Chester before returning to London in 1856 where he commenced a career of scientific journalism.
