Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels and disruption of all types of metabolism. The number of people with diabetes is increasing every year, affecting all segments of the population and age groups. A particularly rapid rate of increase in incidence concerns type 2 diabetes mellitus. This is largely due to the lifestyle of people in the modern world, where there is poor nutrition and physical inactivity, as well as increased levels of stress. This lifestyle is the main modifiable risk factor for this disease. Lifestyle modification is part of a comprehensive approach to the treatment of diabetes and also plays a major role in preventing its development. This article addresses the mechanism of development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, clinical manifestations and risk factors. The influence of lifestyle on the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and some recommendations for lifestyle modification in patients are also considered.
