Abstract
The combined effects of non-Newtonian couple stresses and rotational inertia on the squeeze film behaviours between parallel rotating circular discs have been analysed in this paper. On the basis of Stokes micro-continuum theory, the non-Newtonian Reynolds-type equation including the rotational inertial effects is derived, and applied to predict the squeeze film performance. According to the results obtained and discussed, the effects of rotational inertia yield a lower squeeze-film load-carrying capacity; however, the presence of non-Newtonian couple stresses provides an increase in the load-carrying capacity and the approaching time. Better squeeze film characteristics of rotating circular discs are achieved by the use of a non-Newtonian couple stress fluid.
