Efficiency of injection-moulded polymer composite spur gears

Abstract

Unreinforced nylon 6/6 and 20 per cent carbon-fibre-reinforced nylon 6/6 gears were injection moulded in the laboratory and tested for transmission efficiency using an in-house developed power absorption test rig. Gear tooth temperature was found to increase, resulting in decrease in the transmission efficiency with the number of cycles. The gear tooth surface deterioration during running and reduction in gear tooth stiffness reduce the transmission efficiency. The transmission efficiency of the polymer-steel gear pair is found to be sensitive to the operating load.
