Abstract
To meet the demands of the flexible manufacturing system, an exploratory approach to the design of fixtures using an expert system is presented. A small part of the range of knowledge existing is utilized to create a database framework that can be used to develop a computerized approach to fixture design. The method allows for an expansion to a relatively large database that, when established, would encompass all of the important practical aspects of fixture design.
