Abstract
The plane strain compression of steel, aluminium, titanium and zinc sheet is investigated. Particular attention is paid to the lubrication of the dies and to methods of testing which eliminate creep. It is recommended that 0-001 in p.t.f.e. film is the most suitable form of lubrication, provided that the final thickness of the sheet is not less than 0025 in. To eliminate the possibility of creep in sheet materials, continuous testing in separate indentations is recommended. The experimental results are correlated with Hill's theory of plastic anisotropy. Agreement is good for steel and aluminium, and for most engineering purposes satisfactory for titanium. The correlation for zinc is poor.
