Abstract

The present state of knowledge of methods of hardening and of strengthening materials and the use of hard materials for tribological applications is summarized. The essential properties of materials for various types of mechanisms such as rolling bearings, gears, cams, etc. are reviewed. Mechanisms of failure and controlling factors are discussed.
