Abstract
Debris-induced surface-initiated fatigue failure has been recognized as a major mode of failure for modern rolling element bearings. The important aspects essential for failure prediction are discussed. The discussion covers contaminant analysis, particle entrainment, surface indentation, stress concentration and debris life reduction. Quantitative relationships are provided. They constitute a set of useful tools for debris-life prediction of roller bearings.
