Abstract
This paper presents an axisymmetric stress analysis of electromagnet manufacture. The processes covered are coil winding, mandrel removal, and heating or cooling. The effects of variable winding tension, mandrel elasticity, and coil-mandrel anisotropy are analysed. Distributions of radial and tangential stress are presented for a wide range of example geometries and conditions, and the use of the techniques to optimize residual stress fields at the conceptual design stage is discussed. The analysis has clear application to other winding processes such as coiling of sheet and manufacture of composite tubes. Comparisons are made between the current analysis and previous analyses of these other processes which have appeared in the literature.
