Abstract

In this article, the impact response and failure modes of square test panels subjected to low-velocity impact were investigated. Two contrasting types of materials were used in the fabrication of the test panels, namely brittle and ductile materials. A relatively extensive experimental investigation was conducted in conjunction with a detailed finite-element analysis. The experiments were conducted using a standard dart test machine and the finite-element analysis was carried out using commercial finite-element software. A simple theory using the yield line method is also included to complement the research work carried out at the university. The brittle failure modes were investigated with acrylic material, while polycarbonate material provided vital information on ductile failure modes. The results of maximum contact force, contact duration, and failure modes are presented, compared, and discussed in this technical article.
