Abstract
A process of modal balancing has been developed in recent years for rotors whose modal deflection shapes ψ1( x), ψ2( x), …, are orthogonal. If a shaft is rotating in massive flexible bearings, these shapes are not orthogonal, so that the correctness of modal balancing for such rotors requires investigation. It is shown that modal balancing is permissible, provided that the functions ψ1( x), ψ2( x), …, are linearly independent and not necessarily orthogonal. The linear independence of the modal deflection shapes is proved for many forms of flexible support.
