Abstract
Higher precision of manufactured parts and surfaces, reduction of processing time with simultaneous increase of tool life and fully automated production are the major aims of research and development in the field of cutting. In order to fulfil the high demands and, in addition, to ensure a high process reliability, new methods for theoretical investigations are required. However, the continuous development of new cutting tools with a complex microgeometry, covered with improved coatings and applied to manufacturing of advanced materials requires high-resolution simulation and non-linear methods. This paper deals with new investigations based on the finite element method (FEM). Burr formation has been investigated with finite element (FE) and also experimentally and the influence of coating-substrate systems will be pointed out.
