Abstract
Most of the existing, mainly graphics-based, approaches to helical groove machining lack generality since they rely on restrictive machining methods, are designed for special applications and are difficult to use in practice. Therefore, helical groove machining is still predominantly approached from an empirical trial-and-error standpoint by most manufacturers in current industry. In this paper, the formulation of a general analytical approach for tapered-web groove machining is presented, which lends itself to computer aided design (CAD) implementations. In this regard the mathematical foundation and examples of different groove machining tasks will be presented.
