Abstract
An analytical investigation of the motor bearing failure of the BB series EMUs vehicle in the FEA Railway was carried out. A track-transmission model with 23 degrees of freedom was developed to enable both linear and nonlinear analysis to be undertaken. The effect of the disturbances from periodic track roughness (corrugation), rail misalignment (dipped rail joint) and motor torque ripple harmonics on drive line dynamic behaviour is thoroughly investigated. The theoretical results obtained, together with information from field and laboratory test, indicate that the 40 Hz resonance within the drive line, induced by inadequate quality track, might be the cause of the bearing failure experienced by the FEA Railway company. As a result of this study, a proposal is made which will ensure a major improvement in the vibrational environment of the transmission system during operation. It is believed that this study contributes toward a better understanding of track-transmission system dynamics.
