Abstract
The influence of fuel enrichment levels on the transient response of a single-point injected engine is reported. The measurements were made on a 1600 cc, four-cylinder engine driving an eddy current brake and linked to a set of inertia flywheels. Throttle ramps of 0.3, 1 and 2 second duration were used and the response of the engine was determined from in-cylinder pressure measurements and, in terms of torque, from the acceleration of the flywheels. The influence of parameters such as manfold temperature and size on the optimum enrichment pattern was then investigated. Measured data are compared with corresponding predictions from a simple model of fuel and air behaviour in the intake system. The results show that for the limited range of conditions explored, the model appears to give a reasonable approximation to the measured values.
