Abstract
Studies in engineering science, including thermofluids, almost invariably neglect well-established methods of designing experiments and analysing experimental data, thereby forfeiting efficiency and incurring the risk of drawing false conclusions on effects and errors. The methods, which are compared with the classical approach, are simply described and are illustrated by relevant examples chosen to aid undergraduate teaching. The ideas have application to university laboratory experiments, to research and to quality assurance in industry.
