Abstract

Thyroid dysfunction and diabetes mellitus are two of the most prevalent endocrine disorders globally, each significantly impacting metabolic processes and overall health. This review article explores the intricate relationship between thyroid dysfunction, which includes hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, and diabetes mellitus, primarily Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Understanding this bidirectional relationship is crucial for effective diagnosis, management, and treatment of patients affected by both conditions. Thyroid hormones play a vital role in regulating metabolism and glucose homeostasis, while insulin influences thyroid function, highlighting the complex interplay between these endocrine systems. Conversely, hyperthyroidism increases insulin sensitivity but can also cause hyperglycemia due to heightened gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis. The presence of autoimmune mechanisms, such as thyroid peroxidase antibodies in hypothyroidism and islet cell antibodies in Type 1 diabetes, further underscores the shared pathophysiological pathways between these conditions.Thyroid dysfunction significantly impacts metabolic parameters, including lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. Hypothyroidism is associated with dyslipidemia, characterized by elevated LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, increasing cardiovascular risk. Both thyroid dysfunction and diabetes independently elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease, necessitating integrated management strategies to mitigate this risk. Genetic and environmental factors play a critical role in the development of both thyroid dysfunction and diabetes.
