Abstract

Anecdotal evidence suggests that, despite a widespread consensus on the importance of studying the history of computing, courses on this subject are rarely taught at the university level. This paper provides data in support of the anecdotal evidence. After surveying over 20 faculty members who have taught or currently teach courses on the history of computing, we found that offerings of this course are indeed on the decline. We report reasons why this may be so, and, more importantly, suggest ways in which computer science (CS) departments, with a bit of creativity, can develop a successful course on the history of computing at their institutions.
