Abstract

SRA Inc. is an independent software development company in Japan with approximately 1,400 employees. SRA Key Technology Laboratory is a subsidiary company of SRA Inc., dedicated to research and consultation, with about 30 people, headed by Kouichi Kishida. SRA-KTL is well known for its uniquely innovative research projects supported by the government; this is unusual because many government-supported research institutes are much larger corporations. Nara Institute of Science and Technology is a national university consisting of three graduate schools, one of which is the Graduate School of Information Science. The school has a Cognitive Science laboratory, with which SRA-KTL has been collaborating for the last several years. Japan Science and Technology Corporation is a governmental organization that supports advanced and creative research in Japan. Its PRESTO (Precursory Research for Embryonic Science and Technology) program has been financially supporting this project for the last two years.
