Abstract
A survey of existing algebraic systems, from batch-oriented "formula-crunchers" to dialog systems with sophisticated mathematical knowledge is given. Results from a comparison of some systems from aspects such as availability, user-orientedness and runtime-efficiency are presented.Finally possible trends in hardware, firmware and software that would make algebraic systems svailable for the wide community of "small" users in science and technology are discussed.
