Abstract

This paper investigates a programming language in which one states one's program as a single imperative sentence and then supplies the compile with a collection of definitions, such as one would find in Webster's dictionary. The compiler would then supply the control flow needed to unify the definitions into a program. The objective was to discover the salient features such a compiler would have to have --- in particular, whether a programming language based on this style of programming might be more natural a way to eliminate control flow than production systems or PROLOG are.
