Abstract

Our presentation deals with the idea of combining symbol manipulation, numerical computation and graphics into a high level environment for solving problems in scientific computing. The basic building blocks are FORTRAN subroutine libraries, a symbol manipulation system ( MACSYMA ) and a vector-matrix language ( APL ). Thus we have chosen two different high level host systems which are suitably connected to the FORTRAN -world. We shall try to give an overall idea of the structure and construction principles of some parts of the system. Our emphasis will be on illustrations of various kinds of possibilities of high-level problem solving in scientific computing.
