Abstract
Demand for higher education continues to rise at double-digit rates, boosting the number of students taking one or more online courses in the U.S. in the fall of 2008 to 2.4 million. Yet while elite schools are reaching the masses as a philanthropic gesture, they tend to avoid granting more degrees. Writer Marina Krakovsky investigates this trend in an article that originally appeared in Communications of the ACM.
