Communication methods of the vocally disabled: a review

Abstract

Despite the growing number of augmentative aids for the vocally disabled, none allows communication at anything near speaking rates. This review looks at the types of vocal disabilities that exist and the aids available to these people. Additionally, the prostheses and speaking techniques available to laryngectomees are examined in some detail. Finally, some of the current research into augmentative aids for the vocally disabled is briefly covered.
