Abstract
In the design of programs, and the tuning of operating system performance, consideration is sometimes given to the effect of virtual memory behavior. An important but often overlooked statistic of virtual memory dynamics is that of page life (the real time required for an unreferenced page to be removed from memory). Page life values are related to page rates but are more easily compared with program timing and thus are easier to understand. Measurements of this parameter for an IBM VS/1 operating system are presented and discussed.
