Roman Stone Artefacts Preserved in Municipal Garden of Konya Çeşmelisebil

Abstract

Çesmelisebil is a neighborhood in the Sarayönü district of present-day Konya province. The ancient settlement is known as Gdanmaa or Kristenos, which hosted many civilizations, was within the borders of Ancient Phrygia. Numerous archaeological findings were collected from the Roman and Byzantine Periods in the city. Some of these findings are located in the garden of municipality building. The stele and altar finding group included in the study are in the form of rectangular prisms, and made of local limestone. The main relief figures on the findings generally demonstrate the same type and are depicted singly or in pairs. The iconographic and stylistic character of these figures, which are carved in low relief, are dated to 2nd-3rd centuries AD when compared to the artefacts in the nearby region. It is also seen that these main relief figures are accompanied by Greek inscriptions and various objects. It is understood that these objects are household items such as spindles, distaff, houses, trivet tables which were used by women in daily life. Therefore, these artefacts, which we understand that belong to a woman or a man in the context of inscriptions, also provide important data about the burial tradition and cultic
