Abstract
The Monodonta turbinata is a densely populated species on the coasts of Iskenderun Bay, Mediterranean Sea. These species contain a high amount of chitin, which may be converted into chitosan. The goal of this research is to extract chitin and chitosan from M. turbinata and characterize it utilizing techniques such as X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In addition, the analysis of these samples was done by solubility and deacetylation degree. The yields of chitin and chitosan obtained from M. turbinata were calculated as 60.260.96% and 801.29%, respectively. FTIR spectrum analysis results showed the presence of functional groups in different bands and confirmed that the samples were chitin and chitosan. Using FTIR analysis DD value was found to be 84.83%. The crystalline index (CrI) of chitin obtained from shells was calculated as 54.92%. SEM analysis results displayed the morphological differences between chitin and chitosan biopolymers. The results show the M. turbinata shells waste from the İskenderun Bay, as a promising chitin and chitosan source for several applications in Turkey.
