Abstract

Acute urinary retention (ischuria) is a pathological condition caused by the impossibility of emptying the bladder. The ischuria prevalence in men prevails over the prevalence of this pathology in women. The leading causes of acute urinary retention (AUR) in men are benign prostatic hyperplasia, early postoperative period, prostate cancer, and medications. AUR patients need emergency care, which consists of bladder decompression. The first stage of treatment (decompression) can be performed in three ways: catheterization, suprapubic capillary puncture, or epicystostomy. The second and third stages consist of the diagnosis and treatment of the underlying disease. The choice of treatment method depends on the patient's condition, his underlying disease and possible complications.
