Abstract
The aim of the work was to study the diagnostic value of clinical, microbiological and histopathological methods for detecting the fungal balls of the paranasal sinuses. Material and methods. An analysis of investigation and treatment of 17 patients was carried out, in whom structureless caseous masses were found during endoscopic sinus surgery, which were possible to suspect the presence of a fungal ball. The examination of the material removed during the operation included microscopy, culture and histopathological examination. Results. Histopathological examination confirmed the clinical diagnosis of fungal infection in all 17 patients with isolated lesions of the sphenoid sinus. Primary microscopy revealed fungal mycelium in 70.5 % of cases). Mycological study found the growth of filamentous fungi in 29.4 % of histopathologically confirmed cases.
