Abstract

The study of materials from waterbodies and water courses of the Far North of Western Siberia (Yamal, Gydansky, Tazovsky peninsulas) and Karelia has shown that Sellaphora vekhovii manifests significant variability of its valve length and width, number of striae and areolae in 10 μm, number of shortened striae around the middle area and valve shape. It is established that the variability of quantitative features obeys certain regularities (with increasing a valve length, its width increases as well, the width/length ratio and the number of striae and areolae in 10 μm decrease), which are observed for some other pennate diatoms. The conspecificity of Sellaphora vekhovii and the similar species S. elorantana is shown and the diagnosis of S. elorantana is emended on the base of original and published data.
