Abstract
The recently increased appreciation of the advantages of map data in digital form is accelerating the application of automated cartography. Research projects are changing to production and larger databanks are now being considered and even generated. One of the most important entities in any such system is an interactive display and edit facility. The need for display and interaction within a time scale of seconds is stressed if the cartographer is to be able to do his work in an efficient manner. Many systems at present being built up either have no interactive capability or do not appreciate the importance or the possibility of such speeds of operation. The system designed by the University of Saskatchewan has always been orientated to the very fast data handling of large bulks of cartographic data; the requirements of display and edit leading to this system are described.
