Abstract
Alarming statistics and the prevalence of lawsuits involving students with disabilities reaffirm the pressing need to address inequities. An effective way to ameliorate disparities is to increase special education legal literacy—which encompasses the knowledge, understanding, and skills that enable educators to apply legal rules to their everyday practice. Special education legal literacy should be prioritized because (1) students with disabilities are guaranteed a set of unique legal protections and entitlements, (2) educators are woefully underprepared in special education law, (3) schools encounter pervasive legal challenges, and (4) many of these issues could be reduced with more effective training.
