NESTED VALUE-BY-AREA CARTOGRAMS FOR SYMBOLIZING LAND USE AND OTHER PROPORTIONS

Abstract

A new map symbol is suggested for showing what proportions of a county or province are in certain land uses. The map makes use of cartograms centered within each county or province and scaled so that their areas represent the proportions to be symbolized. Computer programs can be used so that the cartograms may be located, scaled and adjusted for reader perception with minimum effort. Such a map may also be used for proportions other than land use.
