Abstract

The ethics of practice for physicians is inseparable from the profession’s ethic, its considered relationship with the society within which the profession’s members practise. Contemporary Canadian challenges call for further reflection here: is the profession somehow morally distinct from society, submerged within it, simultaneously both distinct and not distinct? Such reflection may dictate change to the professional Code; it should enhance clarity concerning the profession’s commitment to society’s service. Further, it is necessarily ongoing and, for students, best begun at the time of their socialization into the medical profession.
