Culture, Intellect, and Context

Abstract

The past decade of writing on the intellectual history of Ontario has resulted in the creation of a pluralistic and significant historiographical field; yet relatively few mainstream historians (those usually found in university history departments) have written cultural history. This article surveys recent published work in the field, draws attention to the need for more systematic and theoretical attention to cultural process and transformation, and argues that the capacity to do so Is significantly diminished by organizing discussions of intellectual and cultural history to provincial or regional boundaries.
